Congress MP Shashi Tharoor Responds to BJP’s Claims in Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Phase Two

Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Phase Two: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor Responds to BJP’s Claims

In the ongoing Lok Sabha Elections 2024, Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor, has responded to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) attempts to divert voter attention. The BJP has been claiming that the Congress party intends to snatch the gold and mangalsutra of women. Prime Minister and BJP leader Narendra Modi had alleged last week that the Congress wants to take away the gold and property of people and distribute it among “those having more children.”

Tharoor’s Response to Modi’s Mangalsutra Jibe

Shashi Tharoor has refuted these claims, stating that nowhere in the Congress manifesto does it talk about wealth redistribution or taking anybody’s gold and snatching the mangalsutra of women. Tharoor considers these attacks from the BJP as preposterous and a measure of their desperation. He believes that the BJP knows they are losing this election and will resort to any means to tarnish the Congress party’s image.

Tharoor expressed his views to ANI, saying, “Nowhere does it (manifesto) talk about wealth redistribution. Nowhere does it talk about taking anybody’s gold and snatching the mangalsutra of women. This is such preposterous attacks that we are seeing from the BJP. It is a measure of their desperation. They know that they are losing this election and they will fling any mud that they can.”

Tharoor’s Stance on Rival BJP MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s Campaign

When asked about his rival BJP MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s campaign in Kerala, Shashi Tharoor stated that he has always maintained that the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 is a three-cornered contest. He acknowledged his opponents’ ability to put up a strong campaign, whether it be the CPI candidate or the BJP candidate. However, Tharoor remains confident in his ability to succeed once again.

Tharoor said, “I’ve always respected my opponents and their ability to put up a strong campaign, be it the CPI candidate (I took the seat from his party in my first campaign) or the BJP candidate (the BJP came second in both 2014 and 2019), but I also remain completely confident in my ability to once again succeed.”

Tharoor’s Response to BJP’s Hindu Agenda in Thiruvananthapuram Constituency

Regarding the BJP’s focus on the Hindu agenda in the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency, Shashi Tharoor believes that the politics of communal hatred has no appeal in the entire South, not just Thiruvananthapuram. He emphasized that people elect a government to look after their welfare, not just their religion. Tharoor believes that when voters prioritize their self-interest, they will vote the BJP out of office. The BJP’s attempts to make communal appeals are seen as predictable and unwanted.

Tharoor said, “People elect a government to look after their welfare, not just their religion, and when they vote in their self-interest, they will vote BJP out of office. BJP wants anything but that and hence wants to make the predictable communal appeal.”

Tharoor’s Response to Anti-Incumbency Trend in Kerala

When asked about the anti-incumbency voting trend in Kerala, Shashi Tharoor highlighted his position as an incumbent MP for 15 years. He stated that anti-incumbency settles in when there is a lack of performance, but he believes that he has been an active and dedicated representative for his constituency. Tharoor believes that those who have seen him in action for 15 years have multiple reasons to appreciate his services to the constituency, along with his stands on national issues in Parliament.

Tharoor said, “Anti-incumbency settles in when there is a lack of performance. As an MP, I have seen anything but that. Those who have seen me in action for 15 years have had multiple reasons to appreciate my services to the constituency, besides the stands that I have taken on national issues in Parliament.”
