Infosys Fined CA$1.34 Lakh for Alleged Underpayment of Employee Health Tax in Canada

Infosys, the renowned Indian IT company, has recently found itself in the midst of a legal issue with the Canadian government. The company has been fined for allegedly underpaying employee health tax for the year 2020. The penalty amount imposed on Infosys exceeds CA$1.34 lakh, which is approximately equivalent to Rs 82 lakh.

According to a regulatory filing, Infosys received an order from Canada’s finance ministry on May 9, 2020, outlining the penalty for the alleged underpayment of employee health tax. Despite this setback, Infosys has stated that the imposed penalty is not expected to have a significant impact on their financials, operations, or other activities.

Legal History of Infosys

It is worth noting that this is not the first time Infosys has encountered legal challenges in recent years. Back in 2013, the company faced accusations of visa fraud in the United States. Subsequently, Infosys reached a settlement in the case, agreeing to pay a substantial amount of $34 million.

These legal entanglements serve as reminders of the complexities and challenges that global companies such as Infosys navigate in the international business landscape.
