Paraguayan President Santiago Peña was honored with the “CHLI Founders Award for International Leadership” during the annual gala and leadership awards in Washington DC. During the event, President Peña highlighted Paraguay’s remarkable growth and flourishing democracy, drawing a sharp contrast with Argentina’s economic performance.

Paraguay’s Economic Success and Commitment to Development

President Peña emphasized the significant strides made by Paraguay, attributing the country’s success to a low-tax fiscal system and an open economy. He underscored the positive impact of these policies on the youth of Paraguay, enabling them to grow, develop, and achieve sustainable levels of development. Furthermore, President Peña reiterated Paraguay’s commitment to continuing its efforts towards sustainable development, firmly rooted in democracy and freedom, positioning the country as a beacon of progress in Latin America and the world.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties with the United States

President Peña expressed his administration’s prioritization of bilateral relations with the United States. He acknowledged the historically strong relationship with the US government and administration, while also recognizing the need to engage in meaningful dialogues with the US Congress to overcome existing challenges. Additionally, President Peña highlighted Paraguay’s strategic geographical position, emphasizing the country’s aspiration to transcend its image as a landlocked nation and actively integrate with the global community.

During his visit to Washington, President Peña held discussions with key White House advisors, including Jake Sullivan, Daniel Erikson, and Chris Dodd. The meetings also featured high-level representatives from Paraguay, including Ministers Rubén Ramírez Lezcano (Foreign Affairs), Javier Giménez (Industry and Commerce), and Gustavo Villate (Information and Communication Technologies). The discussions encompassed a comprehensive review of current international affairs, with a specific focus on Taiwan, Israel, and Ukraine.

Minister Ramírez Lezcano highlighted the significance of these meetings in elevating bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of knowledge transfer, technology exchange, and the training of law enforcement personnel. These collaborative efforts are poised to advance various aspects of cooperation between Paraguay and the United States, reflecting a shared commitment to mutual progress and development.
