Nine Injured in Explosion in Acapulco, Mexico

An explosion rocked the main square of Acapulco, a popular Pacific coast resort, injuring nine people late Sunday. The southern state of Guerrero’s prosecutors have not yet determined the cause of the explosion, but some injuries were consistent with a flammable device, indicating a possible intentional act. Among the injured, a baby is reported to be in serious condition.

The incident occurred in a bustling restaurant-lined square frequented by both locals and tourists. The state government emphasized its commitment to supporting both residents and visitors in the aftermath of the explosion.

This violent episode adds to the growing concerns in Acapulco, which has been struggling with a wave of grisly violence. In late May, six bodies were discovered strangled and dumped in the city, while earlier, five dismembered bodies were found on a street. The resort city is still reeling from the devastation caused by Category 5 Hurricane Otis in October, which left at least 52 people dead and severely damaged numerous hotels.

While Acapulco has a history of targeted violence, mass indiscriminate attacks like the recent explosion are relatively rare. The authorities are currently investigating the incident and providing necessary aid to the victims.
