Afghanistan Battles Harsh Winter Weather: Deaths, Livestock Loss, and Road Closures Reported

Afghanistan has been grappling with severe winter weather conditions for the past three weeks, resulting in a significant loss of life, livestock, and infrastructure damage. The Ministry of State for Natural Disaster Management reported at least 60 deaths attributed to snowfall, rain, and cold weather since the beginning of Hoot (the first month of the Afghan solar calendar).

Heavy Toll from Winter Weather

The harsh weather has claimed at least 60 lives and injured another 34 people. Over 177,000 livestock have perished due to the cold conditions, and more than 1,600 houses have been destroyed by the snow and storms.

Relief Efforts Underway

The Ministry of State for Natural Disaster Management, in collaboration with international organizations, has provided aid to over 22,000 families across the country. Residents in affected areas are urging the Islamic Emirate for further assistance as many have lost livestock and faced personal hardship due to the snow.

Travel Disruptions Due to Road Closures

The Salang Pass and several roads in Bamiyan, Ghor, Sar-e Pol, Nuristan, and Farah have been blocked due to snowfall and severe storms. The Department of Meteorology predicts snowfall, rain, and potential flooding in 15 provinces over the next two days.
