Belgian Muslims Begin Ramadan Amidst Concerns of Islamophobia

Brussels, Belgium – March 11, 2024

Belgian Muslims join their counterparts around the world in welcoming the holy month of Ramadan, which began today, March 11th. This year’s Ramadan coincides with the first day in countries like Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh.

Despite Islam not being the dominant religion, Belgium has a significant Muslim population, with estimates ranging from 7% to 9%. The community is primarily composed of individuals of Moroccan and Turkish descent, with smaller groups from Algeria, Tunisia, and sub-Saharan Africa.

Throughout Ramadan, Muslims observe a daily fast from dawn to dusk. Pre-dawn meals (suhoor) provide sustenance for the day, while families and friends gather for the evening meal (iftar) to break the fast. Mosques and Islamic centers often host communal iftars, fostering a strong sense of community during this holy month.

However, a shadow hangs over Ramadan celebrations in Belgium. There’s been a disturbing rise in Islamophobia, with reports of hate speech, discriminatory acts, and violent attacks targeting Muslims and Islamic institutions. This troubling trend extends to the political sphere, with some parties and figures criticized for promoting anti-Muslim sentiments.

In 2022, the Executive of Muslims of Belgium (EMB) even filed a complaint against Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne, accusing him of violating the constitution through anti-Muslim rhetoric.

As Belgian Muslims embark on their Ramadan journey, the hope is that this holy month serves as a bridge for understanding and tolerance.
