Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Awaits Election Date to Return

Sheikh Hasina’s Temporary Stay in India

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India on Monday after weeks of deadly protests forced her to resign. Currently, she is sheltering in a safe house in the New Delhi area. Indian media reports suggest that she might seek asylum in Britain, although the British Home Office has not commented on these reports.

Interim Government Takes Charge

A caretaker government led by Nobel Peace Laureate Muhammad Yunus was sworn in on Thursday. This government will be responsible for holding new elections in Bangladesh. Hasina’s Awami League party does not feature in this interim administration, following a student-led uprising against her that resulted in nationwide violence, killing around 300 people and injuring thousands.

Comments from Sajeeeb Wazed Joy

Hasina’s son, Sajeeeb Wazed Joy, based in the US, stated, ‘For the time being, she (Hasina) is in India. She will go back to Bangladesh the moment the interim government decides to hold an election.’ Joy also mentioned that he would not refrain from joining politics if necessary, expressing confidence that the Awami League would participate in the upcoming elections and potentially secure a victory.

International Reactions

Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar conveyed on Thursday that he had spoken to his British counterpart about the situation in Bangladesh but refrained from sharing specifics. The global community is closely observing how the caretaker government will manage the election process and handle the country’s political stability.
