Gaza Faces Devastating Hunger Crisis as Children Suffer Malnutrition

Emaciated children are arriving in alarming numbers at hospitals in Gaza, painting a grim picture of the worsening hunger crisis unfolding in the war-torn territory.

Heartbreaking scenes from Al-Awda health center in Rafah showcase the dire situation. Nurse Diaa Al-Shaer describes an influx of children suffering from malnutrition and various other illnesses.

Ahmed Qannan, a toddler barely recognizable from his pre-war weight, lies fragile in a yellow cardigan. His aunt, Israa Kalakh, expresses her fear and helplessness as his condition deteriorates.

Five months of conflict followed by mass displacement have led to acute food shortages, triggering a nutrition crisis, as the UN alarmingly describes it. This crisis adds another layer to the already devastating humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza.

Gaza’s Health Ministry reported on Sunday that 15 children in the northern part of the enclave, facing the most extreme food shortages, have died from malnutrition or dehydration at Kamal Adwan hospital.

The World Health Organization (WHO) spokesperson, Christian Lindmeier, expresses concern that the unofficial death toll might be even higher.

This worsening hunger has intensified criticism towards Israel, with prominent figures like U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris urging the country to significantly increase aid flow to address the dire situation in Gaza.
