According to Freddie Blay, a former chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Germany and other international lenders have threatened to demand immediate debt repayment if President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo signs the bill into law.

He stated, “We depend on international bodies for financial aid…Germany, I am aware of, says if we impose such a bill, they will demand their payment on loans and no compromise on that.” The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also reportedly expressed concerns about the bill and its potential impact on Ghana’s financial standing.
This development adds to the pressure already mounting on President Akufo-Addo. The Ministry of Finance has issued a strong warning against signing the bill, citing potential economic repercussions. Human rights advocates within Ghana have also staged protests, urging the government to reject the legislation.
