Paris 2024 Denounces Racist Outcry Against Singer Aya Nakamura

The Paris 2024 Olympic Organizing Committee is firmly condemning racist attacks targeting Malian-French singer Aya Nakamura. This controversy erupted after rumors surfaced that Nakamura would perform at the opening ceremony.

Nakamura, a French citizen who immigrated as a child, faced xenophobic backlash from far-right groups in France. These groups objected to her representing French culture despite her legal status and artistic achievements.

The Controversy

The controversy began with reports of Nakamura potentially performing a song by legendary French singer Édith Piaf at the Olympics. This seemingly innocuous choice sparked outrage from some French far-right factions.

The group “Les Natifs” held a protest in Paris, displaying a banner that read: “There’s no way Aya, this is Paris, not the Bamako market,” referencing the capital of Nakamura’s birthplace, Mali. Additionally, supporters of the “Reconquest” party jeered at Nakamura during a recent rally.

Olympic Committee’s Response

The Paris 2024 committee swiftly denounced these racist attacks. They emphasized inclusivity and diversity as core values of the Olympics, stating that “such remarks are totally unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.”

Showcasing French Diversity

French Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra echoed this sentiment, highlighting Nakamura’s contributions to French music. This incident has sparked discussions about racism and national identity in France. While the official performers for the opening ceremony remain unconfirmed, the hope is that the event will celebrate the rich tapestry of French culture, including its diverse voices like Aya Nakamura.
