Peru President’s Home Raided in “Rolexgate” Corruption Inquiry

Peru was thrown into turmoil as police conducted a raid on President Dina Boluarte’s home, searching for a collection of Rolex watches that were allegedly undeclared by the president. This operation, which has been dubbed “Rolexgate,” was initiated due to concerns over the luxury watches that Boluarte had been seen wearing at public events since assuming office in December 2022.

The government has strongly condemned the raid, labeling it as “disproportionate and unconstitutional.” Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen expressed his dismay at the political turmoil caused by the incident, which has had a negative impact on investments and the nation as a whole. However, despite the government’s objections, the investigation has gained momentum.

The government comptroller has announced a review of Boluarte’s asset declarations from the past two years, indicating that the investigation is expanding. Boluarte, on the other hand, maintains her innocence and asserts that she entered government with “clean hands” and will leave with the same integrity. She defended her ownership of a Rolex watch, explaining that it was purchased with the earnings she had accumulated since the age of 18.

The raid itself was a dramatic event, broadcasted on local television. It was carried out in the early morning by a joint operation between the police and the prosecutor’s office. The president’s residence in the Lima district of Surquillo was forcibly entered, while the government palace nearby was also raided simultaneously.
