Portuguese Passport Surges in Power, Ranking Third Most Desirable Globally

LISBON – Portuguese citizens can now boast holding one of the world’s most coveted passports, according to the 2024 Nomadic Passport Index by tax and immigration consultancy Nomad Capitalist. The Portuguese passport jumped to third place, surpassing heavyweights like the United Arab Emirates (now at sixth) and Germany.

The ranking goes beyond just visa-free travel, which is a typical metric for passport power. The Nomadic Passport Index considers a broader spectrum of factors including taxation, global perception, the ability to acquire dual citizenship, and personal freedoms.

“Passport power isn’t just about how many countries you can visit without a visa,” the Index explains. “Citizens of different countries face vastly different tax burdens, limitations on personal freedoms, and scrutiny when traveling.”

Switzerland takes the top spot in the 2024 ranking, displacing the United Arab Emirates which held first place last year. Portugal’s significant rise is attributed to its consistent performance across most categories, with a slight edge over Ireland in personal freedom.

Finland, renowned for its extensive visa-free travel options, sits at a close fourth, highlighting the importance of global mobility in the rankings. Meanwhile, Bulgaria experienced a ten-place jump, landing at 32nd, largely due to its recent integration into the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel within most European countries.

The rise of Portugal as a passport powerhouse reflects its growing appeal as a destination for international investment and relocation. The country’s favorable tax environment, combined with a high quality of life and strong global standing, make it an increasingly attractive option for those seeking a global lifestyle.

This ranking serves as a valuable resource for individuals and families considering international opportunities. By considering a wider range of factors than just visa-free travel, the Nomadic Passport Index offers a more nuanced picture of what truly constitutes a “powerful” passport in today’s interconnected world.pen_sparktunesharemore_vert
