The Portuguese Navy’s Fleet Replenishment and Logistics Ships

The Portuguese Navy has recently announced its plans to acquire two fleet replenishment and logistics ships as part of its national fleet renewal program. The decision was made in accordance with the military programming law 2023-34, which allocated a budget of EUR 100 million for the acquisition of these support ships. The navy has issued an international tender for the construction of the ships, with interested competitors having until 27th April to submit their proposals.

The construction of the first ship is scheduled to commence in the second half of 2024, followed by the second ship in the first half of 2026. The Portuguese Navy aims to commission the first ship into service by 2026, with the second ship expected to join the fleet in the first half of 2028.

These fleet replenishment and logistics ships, designated as NRE (Navio Reabastecedor de Esquadra e LogĂstico), will play a crucial role in providing logistics and amphibious transport support to both Portuguese and allied naval forces. By acquiring these ships, the Portuguese Navy aims to enhance its capabilities and ensure efficient and effective operations for its fleet.

The acquisition of these support ships is a significant step towards the modernization and renewal of the Portuguese Navy’s fleet. It demonstrates the commitment of the Portuguese authorities to maintain a strong and capable naval force. With the construction of these ships underway, the navy is looking forward to the enhanced operational capabilities that these vessels will bring.
