Tragedy Strikes Gaza’s Christian Community as Mother and Daughter Killed in Church

In a heartbreaking incident, a Christian mother and daughter were shot dead by an Israeli sniper on the premises of the Holy Family Church in Gaza City, according to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. The victims, identified as Nahida and Samar, were seeking refuge in the church along with dozens of displaced people.

Cold-Blooded Shooting

The patriarchate condemned the act, stating that the women were “shot in cold blood inside the premises of the Parish, where there are no belligerents.” The tragic event unfolded as Nahida and Samar attempted to make their way to the Sister’s Convent within the church. The elder woman was killed while trying to carry her daughter to safety.

Lack of Warning and Further Casualties

Adding to the horror, the statement emphasized that no warning was given before the shooting commenced. Seven more individuals sustained injuries as they valiantly tried to shield others from the gunfire.

Targeted Death Campaign

Hammam Farah, a family member of the victims, expressed outrage, calling it a “targeted death campaign during the Christmas season on the world’s oldest Christian community.” The Christian community in Gaza, already facing dire circumstances, is on the verge of extinction. Approximately 800 Christians remain, with many seeking shelter in churches due to the ongoing conflict.

Attacks on Places of Worship

The Holy Family Church is not the only religious site targeted. Earlier that morning, an Israeli tank reportedly fired on the Convent of the Sisters of Mother Theresa. The convent housed around 54 people with disabilities, and its destruction has left many without essential medical equipment. The Red Cross has urgently requested intervention from the Pope.

International Outcry and Calls for Accountability

The tragic incident has sparked international outcry, with calls for accountability and an end to violence against civilians, especially in places of worship. The Holy Family Church, a symbol of refuge for displaced individuals, has become a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of the conflict on innocent lives. The situation in Gaza remains tense, with communities grappling with the consequences of ongoing hostilities.
