UN Expert on International Solidarity Visits Denmark and Greenland

The UN Independent Expert on Human Rights and International Solidarity, Cecilia M. Bailliet, has embarked on a ten-day visit to Denmark and Greenland. This visit aims to assess how Denmark’s international cooperation and development efforts contribute to promoting human rights both domestically and abroad.

Focusing on Inclusion and Marginalized Groups

A key focus of the visit is to examine the inclusion of marginalized groups in international solidarity actions. Ms. Bailliet will explore how Denmark ensures the participation of youth, indigenous peoples, women, minorities, and refugees in addressing global challenges such as climate change and inequality.

Engaging with Various Stakeholders

During her stay, Ms. Bailliet will hold meetings with government officials, civil society organizations, academics, and representatives from the judiciary, legislature, and diplomatic corps. In Greenland, she will also engage with local stakeholders to gain insights into the specific challenges and opportunities faced by the region.

One particular area of interest for Ms. Bailliet is the revised draft declaration on the right to international solidarity. She will discuss this draft with academics and other relevant actors to gather valuable insights.

Conclusion and Future Steps

The visit is set to conclude on April 18th, after which a press conference will be held at the UN City Copenhagen for accredited journalists. Ms. Bailliet will then present her final report to the Human Rights Council in June 2025.
