Unexpected April Fool’s Snow Blankets Parts of Latvia
April Fool’s Surprise: Snow Blankets Parts of Latvia!
Latvians woke up to a rather unexpected sight on April 1st – a blanket of snow! This comes after an unseasonably warm March, with a sunny 31st followed by thunderstorms and promises of a balmy April.
The surprise snowfall seems to have mostly affected rural areas, with reports on social media indicating a continuation of the snow and blizzard conditions into the morning. While the capital, Rīga, escaped the whiteout, temperatures there still dipped to a chilly 13°C.
For those venturing outside the city, be warned: roads are icy and slippery, especially smaller local gravel roads. The Latvian weather service reports snow depths of up to 3 centimeters in some areas.
Thankfully, this wintry prank from Mother Nature is expected to be short-lived. Weather forecasts predict conditions will improve throughout the week. After all, a bit of unexpected April snow is a tradition in itself, right?
